Earth Day With An Aquatic Twist : Marine enthusiasts ask that the underwater world not be forgotten From Coral Reef Alliance (CORAL) Monday, April 22, 2002 BERKELEY, CA -- What do Leonardo DiCaprio and William Shatner have in common with a Filipino paddleboat racer, a South Carolinian underwater monopoly player and a disabled scuba diver in Jordan? They are all part of Dive In To Earth Day, an international Earth Day celebration, which focuses attention on the Earth's "forgotten 70 percent" -- the oceans and bodies of water that cover nearly three-quarters of the planet's surface. This weekend, Dive In volunteers in over 50 countries and territories are taking action to protect the important natural resources found underwater. "People don't really think about what happens beneath the surface of the water -- out of sight, out of mind," says Leonardo DiCaprio, Dive In Host Committee Member. "Dive In To Earth Day reminds us that what we do on land affects what happens in the sea. Whether you live on the coast or in the Midwest, we can all make a difference for the future health of our oceans." Other Host Committee members include actor William Shatner, National Geographic's Explorer-in-Residence Dr. Sylvia Earle, and conservationists Philippe and Alexandra Cousteau. Tens of thousands of volunteers will be gathering at beaches, shorelines and underwater dive sites to participate in Dive In activities. Among the many activities are: coral reef surveys in Bangladesh, a webcast underwater costume contest in the Caribbean, a trash cleanup along a Brooklyn canal, an underwater quarry cleanup in Latvia, the creation of a giant peace sign made out of kayaks in Florida, and an environmental disco for fishermen in the Philippines. The Dive In To Earth Day website lists all Dive In activities around the world. For more examples and local events go to: http://divein.coralreefalliance.org/findanactivity. Dive In To Earth Day was launched by the Coral Reef Alliance (CORAL) in 2000 to commemorate the 30th anniversary of Earth Day (held annually on April 22). CORAL, a non-profit coral reef conservation organization, coordinates the event in partnership with the Project AWARE Foundation, West Marine, the Dive Equipment and Marketing Association (DEMA), Earth Day Network and the International Coral Reef Action Network (ICRAN). Climb into this clean, green machine and it feels like stepping into
the future. While SUV drivers gawk at the flaps over the rear wheels and children point at the spaceship colors, hybrid drivers will quickly learn there's something deeply sexy about their ride. Not Porsche sexy. The hottie quotient of a hybrid has nothing to do with looks. It's what's inside that counts. Bay Area drivers are so enamored that they've bought roughly one in five hybrids sold in America in the year-plus that the cars have been available. The average time on waiting lists to dance with the two high-mileage hybrids -- the Toyota Prius and the Honda Insight -- is up to five months at local dealers. The cars appeal to the Bay Area's yin and yang: Environmentalism and technology. Here in the incubator of geek chic, low-emissions "green" cars are cool in a way hemp shirts never will be. Listen when a hybrid stops at a light. Silence. Don't reach for the ignition; the motor is still running. (Hybrids have an electric motor and a gasoline engine. An onboard computer decides which is more efficient and switches seamlessly back and forth.) While being the it-car for the in-crowd (Leonardo DiCaprio owns a Toyota
Prius) adds to the hybrid's appeal, gas prices help, too. The Insight averages
61 miles per gallon in the city and the Prius, 52 mpg, according to
Environmental Protection Agency estimates. DiCaprio, Biodiesel to Power Earth Day Events in Washington, D.C.
